Human resources is a term used to refer to how employees are managed by organizations, or to the personnel department charged with that role. The field has moved from a traditionally administrative function to a strategic one that allegedly recognizes the link between talented and engaged people and organizational success. The field draws upon concepts developed in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and System Theory. Human resources has at least two related interpretations depending on context. The original usage derives from political economy and economics, where it was traditionally called labour, one of four factors of production although this perspective is changing as a function of new and ongoing research into more strategic approaches at national levels.

Typical HR Course as offered by Unisa

This course enables students to specialise in employment practices such as recruitment, interviewing and selection. It is a three month course presented by UNISA, through the Centre for Business Management. It is presented on a level equivalent to NQF level 6.

It is presented in a practical way and addresses the following issues:

- drawing up advertisements
- evaluating and interpreting information provided in an application form, cover letter and résumé
- conducting background checks
- building professional rapport and creating the ideal interview situation
- understanding how applicants influence the selection decision with their dress, body language, and personal power
- asking interview questions that promotes valid selection decisions
- being aware of the most common mistakes made by interviewers
- identifying “damage control” techniques displayed - by applicants during an interview
- knowing the most common reasons why interviewers reject job applicants
- being familiar with the legislation related to discrimination and employment equity issues
- negotiating the job offer and applying tactical steps in winning top people
